Lakeland Co-op is currently seeking a Full-Time Sporting Goods Sales Clerk for our Agro Centre at 6020-54 Avenue, Bonnyville, Alberta

What you’ll do:
The Sporting Goods Sales Associate is responsible for the over-the-counter sale of non-restricted and restricted firearms, ammunition, fishing gear, and the issuance of hunting and fishing licences and tags. The role includes services such as scope mounting, rifle zeroing, and assisting customers with firearm, outdoor gear, and licensing needs. The associate must hold a valid PAL with Restricted endorsement (RPAL) and ensure strict adherence to Canadian Firearms Act regulations, RCMP transfer protocols, and provincial licensing policies.

Our Sporting Goods Sales Clerk will:

  • Sell non-restricted (e.g. hunting rifles, shotguns) and restricted firearms (e.g. handguns) in compliance with the Canadian Firearms Program (CFP).
  • Verify and record valid Possession and Acquisition Licences (PAL/RPAL) for all firearms and ammunition sales.
  • For restricted firearms, initiate and complete RCMP transfer applications and await authorization prior to release.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate firearms sales logs, including serial numbers and buyer verification.
  • Mount scopes and optics, perform bore sighting, and zero rifles based on customer requirements.
  • Ensure all firearms and ammunition are handled, displayed, and stored according to legal and safety standards.
  • Efficiently and accurately record all transactions on the POS (Point of Sale) system
  • Assist customers in selecting appropriate fishing rods, reels, lures, and outdoor accessories.
  • Advise on local and seasonal fishing regulations, species limits, and environmental conditions.
  • Process and issue hunting licences, fishing licences, and wildlife tags (e.g. deer, bear, moose) through provincial online systems (e.g. Ontario’s Fish and Wildlife Licensing Service, AlbertaRELM, BC Hunting).
  • Provide accurate information on licensing requirements, season dates, and harvest reporting procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with provincial regulations and identification verification.
  • Deliver exceptional service with professional, knowledgeable, and ethical conduct.
  • Maintain accurate product and licensing records in accordance with RCMP and provincial requirements.
  • Monitor and restock inventory, keeping merchandise organized and store areas clean.
  • Report any suspicious behavior or potential compliance breaches to supervisors or law enforcement.
  • Keep up to date with changes in firearms regulations, fishing/hunting laws, and equipment trends.
  • Represent Lakeland Co-op in a professional and positive manner

Who you are:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Valid PAL with Restricted endorsement (RPAL) is required.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and comply with all legal standards for handling and selling firearms.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Prior retail experience in firearms, hunting, fishing, or outdoor sports is an asset.
  • Experience with firearm servicing (scope mounting, zeroing, etc.) is strongly preferred.
  • Basic computer skills to operate point-of-sale and licensing systems.
  • Familiarity with Canadian firearm classifications and provincial hunting/fishing regulations.
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs and remain standing for extended periods
  • Experience working in a retail setting with an understanding of basic retail concepts
  • Excellent communication skills with strong interpersonal and customer services skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work and accomplish tasks with minimal supervision
